Over the more than 7 years studying and living free software and Linux in the day to day I could meet a myriad of reasons that motivates people and businesses to use, promote and contribute to the development model of Free Software. But recently we have heard more talk in the media theme, and this is very good for us all. With the recent initiatives of the Federal Government, as the definition of recruitment and use of Free Software by the various organs of executive power, we have very favorable conditions for the complete change of scenery for the production of national software.
Well the main reason to use Free Software include:
- Gain technological autonomy;
- Be independent supplier;
- Possibility of differentiation;
- Strategic Vision;
- Financial (cost savings);
- Protect your investment (minimize the risk of suppliers disappear and go with your business);
- Increasing security (in a transparent audit becomes possible);
- Social gain (digital inclusion and social);
- Utilzar hardware considered scrap;
- And be nice to be the Licensing (piracy is serious risk that companies generally do not run);
- Intellectual Promotion (pequisa encouraged by the development and collaborative networks and sharing of knowledge);
- To make money;
- Avoid limitations prorietários systems;
- No part of monopolistic practices;
- Updates faster;
- Prevent viruses and other problems of misuse of the Internet;
- To follow trends or requirements imposed by governments or large multinational companies (customer / supplier);
- To try other alternatives;
- To Multiply knowledge;
- For rebellion;
- To celebrate freedom;
- Freedom for the use (in the manner that suits);
- Freedom for the study (no need for reverse engineering in codes owners) v
- For the Freedom to modify (and charge for it, why not?);
- For the Freedom to redistribute (and charge for it, why not?);
Once Marc Andreessen (Co-founder of Netscape) e the 12 reasons why Free Software is so promising for the market for technology, they are:
1. The Internet is driven by free software.
2. The Internet is the vehicle of free software.
3. The Internet is the platform on which free software is developed.
4. Free software is more secure than proprietary software.
5. Free software takes advantage of all the anti-American sentiment.
6. One of the incentives of free software is respect to "partners" involved.
7. Free software means be standing on the shoulders of giants.
8. Servers have always been expensive and proprietary, but Linux runs on standard platform (x86).
9. Computer board (portable devices and embedded systems in other products) is making increased use of free software.
10. There is an increasing number of companies developing software that are not software companies.
11. Companies are aumentanto its use of Linux.
12. It's free!
Google, Yahoo, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Economica Federal, Casas Bahia, among other large companies also think so.
Have we managed to find some more good reason that leads the Free Software and Linux to a very promising time for its adoption in mass?
