To achieve an effective comparison between the distributions were established some "criteria of comparison" that were points of agreement with the performance of each distribution. Each criterion has a weight according to their importance against the background comparative and other situations inherent in the use of an operating system for server. Each criterion received points from 1 to 10 and the end were counted from the weighting of their respective weights. The outcome of the final evaluation can be seen in Table 1. Generally for each "disabled" or "failure" within the requirements of each criterion was discounted 0.2 or 0.1 points of the criteria being evaluated, according to impact of the "disability".

Tabela 1: Pontuação por Critérios de Comparação

Table 1: Comparison of Criteria for Score

1 - Debian: less disk space; CentOS: occupied much space; openSUSE: not so much space but he left without installing packages essential.
2 - Debian: not included all applications during installation, but could not verify with certainty if a problem was the installer.
3 - Debian: everything in plain text with no alternative, but with tools for administration; CentOS: all text and structure of the files just intuitive.
4 - Debian: not clearly defined, therefore depends on subsequent releases; openSUSE: time support for the smaller CentOS.
5 - This test shows a little maturity distribution of the added potential of getting support from the community more easily. Note calculated on the ranking of the site and http://distrowatch.org number of results returned in a search on the site http://google.com. For an average between the two parameters has become the youngest as follows: "Number of Google results" / "Position in DistroWatch," the best placed at the end received 10, the second 9.8 and third 9.6.
6 - CentOS and openSUSE: can not install different versions of applications directly from official archives, the openSUSE has Yast2 text mode;

Conclusion

Despite the Debian have been both the first openSUSE as CentOS, are excellent options for the implementation of a server within the context presented. The criteria were defined as of a personal perception, but each scenario could present criteria and / or weights (importance) different.

It is salutary to emphasize that the work was done within a well defined context and in situations requiring, for example approved a distribution to a hardware or software, the criteria, results and list of distributions would be evaluated very different.

Looking carefully at the results, as clearly observed is similar in terms of administration of the various Linux distributions when we deal with only text mode (our case). So we had almost a technical tie. The big difference in day-to-day administrator of the will made by his own experience in addition to your kit scritps to perform their routine tasks.

I hope with this work has contributed in some way for those who have little or no exeperiência with Linux servers and now have a starting point for a more effective choice between the various distros available.

The results of openSUSE are under the menu 'Categories'.

I am just a user of Linux, but Debian does not surprise me to have been so well placed. It is a fantastic and very intuitive. If a user is for the Desktop, I know that is, one more point to this distribution so faithful to the ideas of the SL.

    Rodrigo,

Indeed for some screen resolutions to the table of results should be twisting it.

To resolve the problem created an image with the results.

    Thanks for the tip.

The installation of CentOS can be personalized, as well as the Debian, which is highly simple remove squid and derivatives and create a small facility using low on disk space, if you follow the default as in your case, it actually installs a lot of things ...
In the security aspect, I descordar from you in relation to Debian, as in the case of CentOS and OpenSuse to install a system MAC is default (SELinux and AppArmor) already in Debian ..
As for extras, do a comparative cluster in active-active or global file system and reassess the position of CentOS ..
Congratulations for the tests, great article ..

  5. Considering the subjectivity of the evaluation criteria and the difference of hundredths in the notes, which is irrelevant, I do not believe that Debian has been won, there was rather a technical tie.

    Joaquim,

In a comparison test of the criteria used was the policy of security updates and not as a distro is more secure than the other by default. But certainly for other scenarios / tests each distro has its points of emphasis.

  7. Hoping to read a subject interesting, with analysis of performance of each distribution and I encounter with it. Only mimimi, impossible to have more on results.

Seriously, I expected much more appropriate there. ;-)

Lucas Timm ... is your criterion then make a better analysis, exactly the way you want ... if you just mimimi, for many people is new and relevant information.
I, for example, had no information that in Debian you can keep the same package with different versions using aptitute, neither knew the Yast2 you have the option to set apache without touching the config files ... and there will ...

What I am pissed off at times with the community ... that is why everyone thinks it is king in the belly and thinks the world revolves around them. My friend, no matter whether the added nothing to you, you have 2 options ...
1 - Make a level of respect that you expect.
2 - Think 2 times, such information can be of great value to others and accept this as something that adds value to the community, speaking before leaving bad.

It was simpler than the analysis, as everything in life, it had its value.

Congratulations on the initiative and the matter Wasare.

  9. "The criteria were defined as of a personal perception"
With this sentence the test becomes worth almost nothing now ....

    Ciniro,

Maybe we lacked a complementary phrase like "... of who has experience of more than five years of working with Linux systems administration and its services."

    Daniel,

Thanks for the words. Actually my intention was to address the issue with relevant information for all audiences.

    Lucas,

It would be a good opportunity to make their contribution ... you can count on TutoLivre.net to disseminate its work, OK?
