How many know how to Google (company) supports and uses free software as the basis for your business. Thanks to these initiatives can count on a Linux version for the main software called the Google applications for the Desktop.
Let's learn how to install the four main applications: Picasa [1], Google Earh [2], Google Gadgets [3] [4] and Google Desktop Linux [5]. This recipe is for users who do not have intimacy with the terminal and Linux was inspired by this post [6].
Downloading packages
Download the packages directly from the links below (if you prefer to use a terminal with the command wget-c):
http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/pool/non-free/p/picasa/picasa_2.7.3736-15_i386.deb
http://dl.google.com/earth/client/branded/redirect/Google_Earth_CZXD.bin
http://getdeb.agetta.de/ubuntu/hardy/go/google-gadgets_0.9.3-0 ~ getdeb1_i386.deb
Installing the packages
We will install as little "traditional", open the file manager (the "Sites") and navigate to the folder where you saved the files. In packages with a. Deb we run the following procedure: right-click on the file and select "Open With Installer Package GDebi." This will open a window with information about the package, just click the "Install Package", will ask for your password (if administrative user), then the package is installed. When you finish the installation can close the window. (more below has some pictures illustrating some of the steps of the installation)
For Google Earth the process is a little different file (. Bin). First access the file (Google_Earth_CZXD.bin) by the file manager as for other packages. Right-click on the file and selecting "Properties" (last option), the window of properties click the "Permissions" then select the "Run - Allow execution of the file as a program", close the window. Again with the right click on the file now select the option "Open with Other Application" in the window "Open With" expand (click) the option "Use a custom command" and type in the text box and click open bash . A black screen terminal will be open to load the installer, takes a few seconds. After the installer window appears, this can customize the paths of the program and torque (perhaps indicate a sub-directory within the home, eg / home / user / usr / local). The right place to install Google Earth click the "Begin Install", the process / progress of the installation is informed. At the end is allowed to start the program immediately, I advise you to close all windows, installation and on to the next step where you find the programs on the system.
Below some screens of the installation process for both packages. Deb how much. Bin (click to enlarge):
Finding and running the programs installed
Picasa -> go in the "Applications" -> "Charts" -> "Picasa" -> "Picasa"
Google Earth -> go in the "Applications" -> "Internet" -> "Google Earth"
Google Gadgets -> go in the "Applications" -> "Accessories" -> "Google Gadgets"
Google Desktop -> go in the "Applications" -> "Google Desktop" -> "Google Desktop"
Now it's just fun ![]()
